Use Glitter and STILL be Eco-Friendly…

Our Top Tips for using glitter and ways you can still be a friend to the environment.

1. Always try and reuse your glitter. I mean, I never want to throw ANY of our sparkly stash away… but glitter excess is unavoidable when you are doing craft projects.

Try and put your glitter back into the bags you got them from or jars if you keep your glitter in pots. Some projects mean that different colours get mixed in together. I have mixed glitter ‘messy’ with different shades of pinks, blues, yellows etc and when I come to a project that I think may look cool with a mixed glitter I use those instead.

For example I used my pink and purple mixed excess jar for a kind of ombre glittered wine glass project and it turned out so well, it really helped the transition from bright purple to bright pink!

2.  Wear disposable gloves! I’m sure most of you already do when working with glue anyway but it is even more important when working with glitter. This stops any glitter getting stuck on your hands or under your fingernails, so you can have the peace of mind that none of your glitter is reaching the oceans.

Pop them in the bin when you’re done or if you are like me use them for another project if you haven’t done too much damage to them.

3. Use a dry cleaning process. At Crafty Glitter we always use a dry cleaning process after a finished project. Any excess glitter goes back into the plastic storage pots or bags and then I vacuum the craft project areas.

To wipe down surfaces I use a microfiber cloth which picks up the glitter really well. Again this stops the glitter from being washed down the sink as the cloth catches the glitter, I then shake these out and vacuum up what is left.

4.  Wash brushes in minimal water and use baby oil to soften them. As we don’t want any of our glitter being washed down the sink, I took time thinking about how I would look after my paint and foam brushes.

I fill a small ramekin with a little bit of water and washing up liquid and get as much of the glue out as I can by doing this. I mop up this water with heavy duty kitchen roll and toss that in my general waste bin.  I then rub my bristle brushes with baby oil to soften them up, once they are dry I fluff the brush up and the glitter just falls out.

With my foam brushes I have to wash them a couple of times in small ramekins to make sure they don’t go really hard. Once they are dry the glitter comes out of them fairly easy, I just give them a few taps to make sure none is on the flat edges I am using for my new project.

5.  Remove glitter from clothes with a lint roller. This is the best way in my opinion to get glitter off of your clothes. If you are anything like me and clumsy I end up with glitter all over my clothes. The sticky ones are the best for me; I even use them on my fabric shoes. If you don’t have a lint roller some cello tape will do the trick too.

We hope this guide is helpful, working with glitter can be messy we know, but it’s oh so fun and definitely worth the gorgeous sparkly outcome for your craft projects.

Top Tip: Use an extra layer of mod podge to seal your glitter craft to stop it sprinking everywhere!

Glitter Mason Jar for Memories – Glitter a big mason jar and leave scraps of paper for people to write down a memory of the day or a memory you share for you both to look back on, on your 1st anniversary.
